What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
The science, the mechanisms, and the evidence behind pressurized oxygen therapy.
How HBOT Works
During a hyperbaric oxygen therapy session, you breathe 100% pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber at pressures typically ranging from 1.3 to 2.4 ATA (atmospheres absolute). Under these conditions, your blood plasma becomes saturated with oxygen at levels 10 to 15 times higher than normal breathing.
This hyper-oxygenated plasma reaches areas of the body that compromised red blood cells cannot access, including damaged tissue, inflamed zones, and areas with poor circulation. The result is a cascade of healing responses at the cellular level.
Key Mechanisms of Action
Angiogenesis: HBOT stimulates the formation of new blood vessels in areas with compromised circulation, restoring oxygen delivery to damaged tissue.
Stem Cell Mobilization: Research shows that HBOT can increase circulating stem cells by up to 800%, accelerating the body’s natural repair mechanisms.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Pressurized oxygen reduces systemic inflammation by modulating inflammatory cytokines and reducing oxidative stress.
Neuroplasticity: HBOT has demonstrated the ability to reactivate dormant neurons and promote new synaptic connections, particularly relevant for TBI and stroke recovery.
Conditions Treated
HBOT is used for a growing range of conditions, from FDA-approved indications to emerging clinical applications being researched in Europe and globally. These include: traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke recovery, chronic wound healing, sports injuries, post-concussion syndrome, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, long COVID, neurological conditions, and general wellness and longevity optimization. In Sweden, you can experience HBOT at Oxyzen Wellness or learn more at HBOT Sverige.
